New farm/equestrian supply business opened in Ross. Farmer Fred’s. Worth a look.
This weather makes the whole ‘blanket thing ' with horses really hard to gauge. Firstly we had and endlessly rainy summer, then beautiful warm weather in October and now it is blooming freezing!! I don’t like the icy rain that drives down your neck with wind that blows hats off. Not to mention the fact that constant exposure to vicious elements make you look like a chamois leather ....prematurely! I don’t need skin cream, I need axial grease.
We’ve got some lovely new horses in the yard, it really gives the place a buzz when there is a lot of activity.
Most, in fact all weekends Mike is off doing forage deliveries now, its good for him to escape from the farm for a few hours (this is when something ghastly happens like escaped cattle leaving the children and/or liveries to help). Thanks to Corry, Jake and Pauline for helping me round up calves at 6.00am, I looked so scarey first thing in the morning but it was halloween! We have been delighted with the quality of hay/haylage, considering at one stage we doubted we’ve get anything made with the endless rain. The straw is not as golden yellow as normal but even that is an advantage in that the horses do not eat it.
Our good friends Emma and Andy (with George) are leaving the yard. They have a stable with their new house. Mike & I are very sad as they have been fantastic to have around and George is such a character, always trying to get attention! If we had cattle to move through his field he’d wait until the last second then dive through the gate with them ....leaving Mike with language that would fill the swear box. We would never have been ready for our wedding in June if it hadn’t been for their help and sup port....we'll miss them. Running a livery yard is a whole
mixed bag but mostly great fun.
